<description>You wrote: “We simply want to “get back at” the people who’ve harmed us or—even more reprehensibly—who’ve simply gotten in the way of our getting what we want.”

The best revenge is to allow Time to exact its price while doing one’s best to avoid “idiots without conscience” so one does not fall into situations in which thoughts of revenge arise. Indeed, because the number of idiots without conscience seems to be increasing in the world, it is best to live as quietly as one can amongst them unless one has a special duty to protect the weak. (Sadly, not even monasteries are places of real refuge these days.)

In today’s world, many people want to exact revenge on others. Prisons and battlefields are filled with bodies of those hellbent on revenge. Most don’t know how to properly get revenge in the first place and have no business going about trying to get it. One of the key things about proper revenge is that it should be instructive. Another key aspect is that is should be decisive. No playing about. Thirdly, collateral cost should be minimal. In other words, innocent third parties should not have to suffer because of someone else’s errors.

The third part is hard to insure and makes exacting revenge very difficult if not impossible. This is why I wrote what I wrote about Time, which should satisfy most folks if they will meditate upon the “Merciless Heropass” ( Gurdjieff’s phrase). No need for revenge when Time will take care of all matters eventually.
